People are opting for VPS Hosting these days and shifting from shared hosting as they get Remote Desktop Access to their server that makes their Windows VPS or Linux VPS just comparable to a dedicated server. You get to RDP in both Windows VPS as well as Linux VPS. Windows VPS and Linux VPS are both equally efficient and you will have to decide which one to choose among Windows VPS and Linux VPS as it is you who would be working on it.
Now we get on to setting up Remote Desktop on your Server
Usually there are two options available in order to set up and run your remote desktop on your server.
1. Here you set up VPN (Virtual Private Network) between the remote computer and host computer.
2. Here it requires the IP address of your host computer.
Now in order to set up remote desktop access your host computer should have a running Windows XP Professional or Windows95 or better. You should also have knowledge of security settings and networking.
You would need:
A desktop having Windows XP professional as your host computer
A desktop having Windows 95 as your remote computer
Now follow the below mentioned steps:
For setting up VPN
1. You should open “control panel” and then choose “Network Connections”. Then select “Create a new connection” which there under “Network Tasks” on the left hand side. Then click on the “Next” button once a new window opens.
2. Now choose “Connect to the network at my workplace” and then hit the “next” button. Now an option would come as “Virtual Private Network Connection”, select that and hit the “Next” button again.
3. Now put in a “company name” in the field. You can choose any name as per your liking and then hit the “next” button again.
4. Now you have two option to choose from on the “Public Network” page. Either “automatically dial this initial connection” or you can choose “manually”. The automatic option will connect your computer automatically to internet before it will actually connect to the VPN. In the other manual option you will have to connect the internet your VPN each time you wish to do that. Once you have decided the option to choose click on the “Next” button.
5. Now put in the IP address or the network name of the VPN remote access server. Then hit “next”.
6. Check how many users you will have on your computer. If you have many of them then select “Anyone’s Use” in the “Connection Availability” windows. If you are only going to access the server then choose “My use only” and then click on “next”.
7. Now click on “Finish” as you have not completed the task of setting up VPN. In case you wish to have a shortcut for your VPN on your desktop then select that also before you click on “finish”. Now do this entire process for both remote computer and host computer.
For preparing the Host Computer
1. First sign into the host computer that you wish to access remotely as administrator.
2. Then open the “control panel” and then click on “Performance and Maintenance” and then choose “System”. In this window select “Remote” followed by “Allow users to connect remotely on this computer”. Then hit the “ok” button.
3. Hit the “back” button and get back to the “window that has “control panel” as an option. There choose “security center”. Then select “Windows Firewall” option. Then make sure “Don’t allow exceptions” is not checked off in the window that opens.
4. Now select “Remote desktop” box after choosing “Exceptions” tab. Then click on “ok” and then close the window.
5. Open the “control panel” and then choose “performance and maintenance”. Then hit the “computer name” and there give a name to your computer.
6. Now you can connect this computer to the VPS and then leave it open and running.
Preparing the Remote Computer
1. Get connected to the VPN. You can also click on the shortcut you just created before and connect to it.
2. Then open the start menu and then choose “accessories” and then hit “Remote Desktop Connection”.
3. Now put in the host computer’s name or IP address and then choose “Connect” button.
4. Now put in the user name and password that you have to login into the host computer in “Log onto Windows” window. Now hit “ok” and a fresh Remote Desktop Windows will get opened with all your settings, and programs and files that you have put on the host computer.
5. Now you can use the programs and files on this host computer. You could also make changes to the settings from your remote computer. Once you have done what you wanted to do just “log off” from the start menu.
